The photovoltaics industry is one of the most dynamic
industries in the world. With an average annual growth rate of at least
22 % during the last ten years - other sources say 29 % (IEA) or more -
photovoltaics has become a very promising market. According to the assessments
of industry experts the strong growth will continue. The forecasts anticipate
16 to 20 % (Sarasin Bank), 20 to 25 % (RWE Schott Solar) or even 27 to
34 % (Greenpeace).
A glance at the top ten of the estimated 150 PV
companies worldwide shows pronounced concentration at the top. The top
five of the PV industry - Sharp, BP Solar, Kyocera, Shell and Sanyo - have
a combined market share of over 60 %.The top ten manufacture about 80 %
of the world production. This concentration is very likely to increase
and heavy shifting is expected in the lower ranks of the top ten list.
The Japanese corporations will continue to dominate the world PV market
in the years to come. Due to already apparent signs of saturation on the
Japanese market, the important solar markets of Germany and the United
States reckon with increasing levels of Japanese imports.
Further information about the dynamic PV market
and the activities of the big international PV players can be found in
the first edition of SUN & WIND ENERGY, the magazine for solar energy
professionals all over the world. SUN & WIND ENERGY provides detailed
market surveys, product information, detailed company portraits, and also
a useful exhibition calendar as well as a branch directory. The issue's
topics are: newly developed controllers, on the way to perfection of inverters,
a comparative study of vacuum tube technology and a portrait of the Chinese
solar market.
SUN & WIND ENERGY is an offspring of the German
monthly SONNE WIND & WÄRME, published since 1976 and providing
news and spotlights on the latest developments in the solar and wind energy
branches. The editorial team would now like to offer the benefits of its
many years of experience to readers beyond the borders of Germany. The
next issue of SUN & WIND ENERGY will be published in April 2004. Order
